Full disclosure….Ok my office is in Del Mar, I live in Del Mar and my company is called Del Mar Realty Partners, That being said let me try to be as objective as possible as I compare purchasing Del Mar real estate versus La Jolla homes for sale.
Let’s start with a little information on each area;
Del Mar is an affluent beach town in San Diego County, California just north of La Jolla. The population is just under 5,000. Del Mar’s climate is considered sub-tropical / Mediterranean with warm, dry summers and mild winters, and is considered one of the most desirable climates in the United States.
La Jolla is also an affluent neighborhood in San Diego. It is a hilly seaside community, occupying 7 miles of curving coastline along the Pacific Ocean. The population is around 48,000 and the climate is similar to Del Mar.
So La Jolla is a lot larger town the Del Mar. Is bigger better? There are pros and cons. Both towns are upscale and have great shops, restaurants and beaches. Del Mar is a quaint little town and is less pretentious than La Jolla (old money vs. new). That being said, due to its size La Jolla has a lot more shops and restaurants on the coast! It also has The Museum of Contemporary Art and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Del Mar boasts the world famous Del Mar Racetrack. Unfortunately, more people equates to additional traffic, congestion and possibly crime in La Jolla.
La Jolla is served by the San Diego Unified School District. Del Mar is part of the San Dieguito Union High School District. Del Mar has the better public school district although La Jolla has some renowned private schools including the Bishop’s School and La Jolla Country Day School. Santa Fe Christian and Cathedral Catholic or both private schools close to Del Mar in nearby Carmel Valley.
La Jolla had the highest home prices in the nation in 2008 and 2009 (comparing four-bedroom home in communities across the country). Del Mar has consistently been honored as one of the best small beach towns to live in the nation.
The highest priced Del Mar home for sale presently on the market is listed at $33,900,000 and includes a spectacular waterfront property of over 5.5 acres atop the bluffs of Del Mar that lays a beautiful canvas to build your very own vision of paradise with over 396 ft. of oceanfront.
Del Mar Real Estate $33,900,000
The top La Jolla real estate listing is an extraordinary single level ocean front contemporary estate nestled on a premium 2.58 acre bluff top site in La Jolla Farms listed for $27,300,000.
La Jolla Real Estate $27,300,000
Which is best? That’s a decision best left to the individual person! What’s your opinion? You can leave a comment at the top of this post!
If you’re entertaining the idea of purchasing real estate in either Del Mar or La Jolla give me a call. Our “Buyer’s Video” program allows out of town/state buyers to get an insider’s perspective of any homes for sale you are considering. Forget the listing agent’s pictures and virtual tours. They are great as an introduction but what does the property really look like? We will post your video on our YouTube site and you can view what’s really going on with the property. This assists us in narrowing down your list of homes to preview when you travel to San Diego.
Oh and I’ll be happy to send you videos of downtown Del Mar and La Jolla!
